  1. This file contains information on installing and using SoundMOD Volume I.

  3. INSTALLATION
  4. ────────────

  6. 1. Insert the SoundMod disc into your CD-ROM drive.
  7. 2. Change to the root directory of your CD-ROM drive.
  8. 3. Type Install X: <enter> (where X: is the drive to install SoundMOD)

  10. INSTALLATION EXAMPLE

  13. Your CD-ROM drive is drive E: and you wish to install to Drive C:

  22. COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

  25. Question: What sound boards does Inertia Player support?
  26.  
  27. Answer:   Gravis Ultrasound, ProAudio Spectrum, Windows Sound System,
  28.           SoundBlaster, SoundBlaster 16 / 16ASP / PRO,
  29.           Covox/DAC8 on printer port, Stereo-on-1 on printer port,
  30.           Adlib, PC Speaker.

  32. Question: I don't have one of the "supported" cards but I do have
  33.           a sound card.  What do I use?
  34.  
  35. Answer:   If your sound board emulates one of the above, you can likely
  36.           use that setting.    Please run the program README.EXE from the
  37.           \SOUNDMOD.1 directory.
  38.  
  39.           It contains information on the supported sound boards and the
  40.           settings which will make it work.
  41.  
  42. Question: I cannot play some of the larger sound files.
  43.  
  44. Answer1:  Inertia Player requires EMS or UMB memory.
  45.  
  46.           If you are using EMM386.EXE as your memory manager, consult
  47.           your DOS manual for instructions on how to enable EMS memory.
  48.           At most you will need one megabyte.
  49.  
  50.           If you are using MS-DOS 6 (tm) or later, you can type HELP EMM386
  51.           from the DOS prompt.
  52.  
  53. Answer2:  If you are using HIMEM.SYS as your memory manager, you will
  54.           be limited to playing files which are smaller than the amount
  55.           of free DOS memory available after IPLAY loads.
  56.  
  57. Question: Why is there a lot of popping, or slowdowns in the music?
  58.  
  59. Answer:   Some tracked music requires a lot of CPU power to process.
  60.           In other cases, the samples used in the MOD are not designed
  61.           properly and nothing can be done.
  62.  
  63.           While it is possible to use a 386SX-based machine to play MODS
  64.           from this disc, some will simply not play correctly.  You can
  65.           alleviate some problems by not using the Frequency Analyzer, or
  66.           graphical analysis screen in IPLAY with slower processors.

  68. Question: Inertia player locks up when I run it
  69.  
  70. Answer1:  Do not run Inertia Player under MS-Windows (tm).
  71.  
  72. Answer2:  You may need to define your sound card Port, IRQ, and DMA
  73.           addresses.  Your sound card manual will give these details.
  74.  
  75. Question: I am using the [PC Speaker/Covox/Stereo-on-1] interface as
  76.           my sound device and it sounds horrible.
  77.  
  78. Answer:   The PC Speaker is by far NOT a high quality sound device.
  79.           However, with the proper configuration it can produce
  80.           acceptable results.
  81.  
  82.           Go into the \SOUNDMOD.1 directory and run ISETUP.
  83.  
  84.           Choose Advanced Device Setup.
  85.  
  86.           Choose Mixing Speed.
  87.  
  88.           If the sound was popping, or locking up your system, reduce the
  89.           mixing speed. If the sound was weak, or barely audible, increase
  90.           the mixing speed.  It may take trial and error to find the best
  91.           setting for your system.

  93.           These sound devices take an enormous amount of processing power
  94.           to operate.   The higher the mixing speed, the faster CPU you
  95.           need.   In some cases, it will not be possible to listen to some
  96.           of the songs without an actual sound board.
